Alpina is like Mugen and AMG, not from the factory.

BMW has earlier turbo'd cars like their BMW 2002 Turbo from the 1970s

Many of the BMW race motors in the 1970s were turbo'd. And for BMW aficionados, the all-time greatest BMW motor was turbocharged as well:

Paul Rosche (legendary BMW engine designer) designed a small 1.5L 4-cyl motor for BMW F1 in the 1980s that was turbo'd and good for 1500hp.
But is the design much different from the current motor?

it was the 1970s. Its beauty lie in its simplicity and brutality.

The current BMW motors are nothing like the ones from years past. They say the e30 M3 (first M3)'s high-revving (at the time) motor was derived from the early 80's legendary F1 motor. The 1500cc motor could be expanded easily to a 2.0L motor.

Just like how the F20C motor has a much direct lineage to the B20 motors used in Formula 3 racing than the F20A motor used in earlier Accords.

Dinan is to BMW as Comptech is to Honda.
Alpina and Hartge is to BMW as Mugen is to Honda.

oh lawdy! I'm not going crazy with BMWs like I did with the Hondas again

I really thought about buying an e30 M3 to go with the e36 M3 I had at the time. Skipping the e46 and going to the e90

Skyler, you have excellent taste
