So who do you guys recommend for a builder? Anybody in Houston ? I have decided to hold off till I have all the cash so I can do it all at once and not just part of it here and there I did find a full stock engine for 3500........ I think i will buy that and use that as the engine to build my new engine but now I have to re search compression of Supercharged engines and everything else.............. Any ruff estimates how much to build a full Block........ thinking about sending block to Inline or somewhere like that and putting it together myself...... any opinions
If you've never built an engine before, I would HIGHLY advise against experimenting now.
As for buying a fully functional long block, it is nice to know that it is in working condition. However I find it wasteful since almost everything is going to be replaced in favor of upgraded parts. It might be more economically feasible to find a bare block with a good crank (since you'll have to resleeve the block anyway if you plan on running forged pistons).
As for pricing, like I said early, there are a lot of factors for you to consider.
First, components:
Which mfg pistons? (Wiseco, JE, Arias, CP, ETC)
Which mfg con rods? (Manley, Pauter, Crower, Eagle, ETC)
Which mfg bearings? (OEM, ACL, Clevite, ETC)
Are you going to replace the oil pump while you're at it?
Are you going to replace anything else like timing tensioner/MISC?
Second, machine work/assemble:
Who is going to do the machine work? (SO MANY TO LIST HERE, go with what you feel comfortable with)
Who is going to sleeve your block? (Golden eagle, Darton, Inline Pro)?
Who is going to assemble and spec your long block?
How's the condition of the crank?
Do you want to do work to the crank (chamfer oil holes, drill out BB's to install set screws, balance rotating assembly, polish journals, etc)
Balance entire rotating assembly?
Third, head work:
Are you going to be doing any head work on your motor?
Are you going to port/polish the head?
Are you going to be running upgraded valvetrain to protect your bottom end investment?
Are you going to be running oversized valves?
If you answered yes to any of the above, factor in those costs as well.
I don't want to scare you off, but that is the reality of the task you're asking.
