Default Clutch Replacement

I am needing to replace my stock clutch (pressure plate and disk) with an upgrade. I think the first owner of the car and my supercharger were too much for the current setup.

I asked this question at the Christmas party and want other/confirming opinions. Who would you use to install a clutch in your beloved S?

I just tallked to Tony at Jotech and he is recommending the ACT HS1-HDG6 6-pad spring race disk clutch kit. I was originally leaning toward the HS1-HDSS kit with the Street/Sport performance disk. Any opinions?

According to the posts on the board and the user Billman, Anything but a OEM disc will give you the clutch buzz.

And the ACT HD PP with OEM disc is more than enough for a mild supercharger setup. Which is what i have....(in the garage)

I'm thinking about letting Redline Per4mance in Arlington do my clutch job. They qouted me $350 for labor. Jotech qouted me $550 for labor if i bought the clutch from them...

I worked with Kenny Tran and Tony at Jotech and they got it right.

I highly, highly recommend the following setup:

ACT Street/Strip pressure plate
OEM Honda clutch disk (has anti-ringing retainers on the springs)
Comptech lightened flywheel

I had the ACT pressure plate AND the ACT disk for a few thousand miles and the ringing was minimal but present. When JC Autospec put the drivetrain back in my car in November of this year, I went back to the OEM Honda disk (same ACT S/S pressure plate) and am very pleased with the difference it made. Zero ringing, and the pedal effort is just a little bit lighter than with the ACT/ACT setup. It's just right now.

If you're in the Austin area, I've seen no shop more conscientious than JC Autospec. Those guys simply amaze me at every turn.

Best of luck,
Stanford

Thank you very much for the insight. I will investigate that option.

Al

I have nobody to recommend for the work, though, sorry.

You could always just remove the supercharger, I'll give it a good home.

Please don't let them work on your car

One of my good friends had nothing but problems, with 2 completely different cars, after he went there (I could list them all here, but it would take me quite a while). I've met a few other people that have all had similar experiences there as well, and have heard a lot of other stories about them as well.

I wouldn't even bring a car there to get dyno'd, that's how bad some of these experiences are

I had (actually still have, sitting on a shelf) an ACT single carbon clutch & lightweight flywheel that was fine, but a bit stiff for my everyday driving. (I believe it would be fine if you were over 5'7" and didn't clutch with your big toe).

I ended up with a Competition ironman clutch and comptech lightweight flywheel which I am really enjoying. Every now and again I get a bit of the "buzz" but mainly if I need to do something like back up an incline or something.

I didn't have any buzz issues with the ACT either, and that was w/their lightened flywheel.

Two things I'd say:

1 - every install seems different, I've seen the same clutch have different characteristics in different vehicles (including the stock).

2 - any aftermarket clutch designed to hold more horse power is going to be, however slightly, more prone to noise and engaging faster than stock.

PS: Tony @ T1 Race Development installed my Competition clutch and I've had no issues (or really with any of his work).
