^^^ That's an overstatement. The ECU is pretty good at protecting the engine. If the CEL is for something significant enough to cause damage, the ECU goes into "limp mode", and is barely driveable.

Even though the check engine light is off, you can still retrieve the code by plugging in an OBDII scanner. Autozone will do that for free.

Your VTEC is coming on at the correct RPM. If your VTEC was coming on at 6500 RPMs before, then something was wrong.

^^ I take that back... I believe VTEC will sometimes engage above 6K at very high altitudes, like in the mountains.

doesn't it have a window even with stock ecu?

if he wasn't above xx% throttle, it would engage later then it would with, say, 100% throttle?

not sure that this is this guy's problem though based on his description of how he drives...

It may have a VTEC window, but I kind of got the impression that Hondata developed that concept further. All I know is that I never noticed either of my S2000's engaging VTEC at any RPM other than 6K.

hondata may have further developed it but even stock, yes, it does have a window. it is NOT:

0rpm - 5999rpm = non vtec
6000rpm - 9000rpm = vtec

the changeover point is 6k but it does depend on throttle position and some other factors is well. vic's roite.
