Clarkson Hot Metal dvd
Firstly, sorry if this has already been covered in a previous thread but the ever-so-helpful search engine didn't bring up any hits. If it has, you can stop reading now.
Hello?
Right, Clarkson's latest Xmas DVD offering gets off to a fabulous start by him doughnutting a rather sparkly new S2000 (albeit in a very gay nurby blue) with both hands off the wheel - show off!
All through the DVD JC is comparing how cars haven't improved that much over the past years (mentioning lots of stuff covered in his latest book, unsurprisingly). Later on, he drag-races the S against a TR6 - which kicked his arse convincingly until its engine "blew up" Anyway, a Silverstone would have won!
He rolled out the old "and they've never had a VTEC engine go wrong" chestnut but its reasonably nice footage of the car.
All in all, not a bad video with the impressive Zonda vs XJ220 and Carrera GT vs McMerc shootouts. Certainly a lot better than last year's offering which IMHO was simply a re-hashing of several TG excerpts.
Overall though, I reckon it is worth it for a Crimbo present, but its nice to see the S2000 in a mainstream DVD.
Cheers
Ben

Well, without spoiling it for everyone...
YES!
The TR6 pulls a fairly big lead on the S2000 before the ... ahem... engine lets go. But it does look like JC got the start horribly wrong as there's a fairly obvious lurch it he gets the revs/clutch out of sync. Silly man. Having said that, it didn't sound as though the S was being given the beans exactly.

The TR6 has probably got gobs more torque and a stronger transmission. I'll bet the S would have to get rolling and then catch up but would still have nailed the trumpet in the end (ASFIK the TR only has 150 bhp).

IIRC MY's 69-72 had 150bhp which was reduced to 125bhp for 73-75.
The power reduction may have been because the early models had a tendancy to snap drive shafts and or propshafts under hard acceleration. I had two early 6's during the 1970's and both suffered the mentioned failures
Performance for the 69 car, as tested by Autocar was-
0-60 - 8.5
Standing quarter 16.7
Vmax 117
Max torque (net) 159 lb/ft at 3000rpm
Great car

TR6 beats an S2K, leave it out.
Link to TR6 specs
it's only got just over 100bhp and weighs around 1100+ KG depending on year.
that's less than 100bhp per ton.
