Default ECM Idle learn procedure?

I've been reading the manual today trying to trouble shoot my misfire problem.

It details the idle learn procedure. It says the engine should be held at 3000rpm until the fan comes on or until the water temp is 80degrees. Then be allowed to idle for 5 mins. If the fans comes on this time does not count in the 5 minutes.

All this should be done with all electrics switched off.

It also says that resetting the ECM with the PGM tester does NOT require the idle learn to be done again. This is not my understanding of how my OBDII reader works.

I've not been doing this procedure after every reset but the idle does seem low until it learns to idle at 1000rpm. I'm wondering how nessesary it really is?

Also does 3 bars on the dash = 80degrees?

3 bars on the dash can mean a wide array of temperatures! Its not that accurate.

Re the idle learn, it will work it out in the end but it can be a pain in the ass ofr a while. I like to let the cooling fans come on and off twice before Im satisfied its had a chance to sort itself out.

Holding the revs at 3000 for too long can throw the ABS fault light IIRC.
