well we actually have a diagnosis.... which is just what you have all been saying, the powder coated engine cover is the culprit! the extra uncleaned particles they use to sandblast the engine to get the old red paint off has not been cleaned from a particualr part on the underside of the rocker cover! this has then gone around in the engine in the oil and has filled the whole oil filter up (they cut it in half)and also has destoyed the turbines or vanes in the oil pump causing the shiny finish on them to be destroyed and also the bit that causes the pump to keep pressure in the system has failed ( sorry for terrible description) this has then caused loss of pressure and oil starvation which in turn has then caused the egine to develop faults.

they now have to strip the whole engine down to see whats damaged but more than likely what you guys have said!!!! and as these particles have been round the engine so many times it maybe a new engine!!!! one good bit is that as it was a garage that did all the fitting and powder coating service this should be down to them to pay for it all!!!! spoke with them today and they will call me tomorrow!!with whats going to happen now!!!!!

will keep you up to date thanks again for all your helpful messages
The head cover has a cavity for the crankcase ventilation system (will explain in a bit) needs a shroud to stop oil getting chucked into this and then being burnt through the engine otherwise the oil consumption would be sky high. If you sand blasted that in it'd be a fantastic place to get loads of shots trapped.

I'm surprised it got past the oil strainer (pre filter before the pump) but blocking it would cause oil starvation. Any that did get through would easily bladder the pump though and cause havoc further downstream. If there was enough to block the filter the filter would probably switch to divert and then all the blasting medium would go straight to the bearings and........ouch........very ouch.

Pcv system is the way the engine burns any exhaust gasses that get past the piston rings by the way. The hot air rises to the top of the engine and is drawn back into the intake system

Join the group, you're not the first and won't be the last that has this happening to him.

I've killed my d16 in my crx this way and so have many others.

Sandblasting valve covers is just a big no no, doesn't matter how good you think you've cleaned there's always some crap left to fill up your filter or grind down your oil pump etc
