Default EPS Light Is On!

As above. I have reset the ECU, disconnected/reconnected the battery, checked the EPS fuse in the engine bay fuse box, checked the two connectors near the exhaust manifold on the steering rack and no joy. I also took her out for a two mile drive after resetting the ECU,. still, the light stays on and is heavy to steer. I cannot see any leaks...it is really confusing me...Aaaarrrggggghhhh

I don't believe I moved the wheel before starting...but I was in a rush to move my car out of the way before a tractor ran over it.

If it's a JDM then it might be a problem with the speedo convertor or wiring therein. I drowned mine once, and as well as rendering the speedo non-functional, it also fecked up the power steering as it's speed-sensitive.

Convertor(s) will be located under the car next to the gearbox, somewhere near the driver (behind the dash or summat), or both.

EDIT: Or it might not be that at all. Don't have any more knowledge on the subject.

I have UK clocks so the speed sensor shouldn't be an issue.

I was able to get the EPS interrogated by a local garage with the best code reader...it is huge, it displayed:

'Fail safe relay stuck on'

I haven't got a clue where to find this...any ideas before I look in the service manual/trawl through the site? I had a good look earlier and there was no mention of this component.

I'm thinking it's in the Showa unit (possibly everything EPS related is in there?) in the engine bay, drivers side. I'm about to persuade it with a hammer to see if I can free the relay...or break something else!

If not, I'll tap the relays in the fuse box to see if I get anywhere.

That's great, thank you very much. I'm off to tap the relays anyway, but will check that none of the wiring has burnt out/continuity check in daylight tomorrow. If not, I'll need to borrow someone's EPS unit to confirm mine is knackered.

Well, all it took was thumping the Showa unit (Gold in colour) with an adjustable spanner on the driver side in the engine bay to reset the relay. The EPS light is no longer on and I have power steering back. I'm not going to say it's fixed yet before I take her for a drive and will look into getting a new relay in the mean time.

Cheers for your help everyone...Shopman in particular...you're a star.
