Default Fitting New Pads

I've been advised a couple times now that my pads are getting low and I should replace them and also that the discs are lipped and should get them changed too.

To try describe my discs I'd say they have a lip on the outer edge on the front and back face of the disc. The lip is 1-2mm deep at best guess but other than that the rest of the disc looks in good condition.

I figure that when I put new pads on, this lip will cut into the pad and the issue will persist.

Is there any point in changing the discs or could this lip be simply removed without refacing the entire disc? Also, does it matter or should I just bung on a set of new pads and forget about it?

The lip is actually the original part of the disc - the pads dont contact the outer edge, so as the disc wears it leaves that lip on the outer edges.

New pads wont touch the lip either, they will continue to wear the disc in the same place.

Sounds like you need new pads and discs.

Looking at discs on other cars, they all have a smooth faces from the inner edge to the outer edge. No lip. I guess this lip must be uncommon or I'm looking at the wrong cars.

As for new discs, I assume standard steel discs are all the same thus no need to go for Honda OEM, just go for the Brakes Int. ones as they are a good price.

Thats prob because they aren't worn.

Mine are lipped at the mo.

Brakes int ones are fine IMO! A few people on here use them.

I wonder if it's worth adding something about brakes (disks and pads) to the FAQ? There seem to be a lot of questions about them at the mo and several different options (BrakesInternational, BrakeParts, etc).?

Another problem, the lip gets in the way when trying to rotate the caliper off the disc to remove the pads. Is there an easy way to retract the cylinder while the caliper is still over the disc?

Have you undone both bolts?

Problem is the caliper and pads are that close to the disc that you don't have the space to slip past the lip on the outer edge if you follow.

If you can wedge in a screwdriver you can probably push the piston back in.

Might not do the disks any good, but then you don't really care.
