Thumbs down Flickering Dash Lights

The lights on my dash seem to flicker a bit when the car is ticking over.

I have a new battery - last one was knackered (it did it with the old battery too)

Any ideas what might be up, or what to check?

Thanks

I asked this some time ago, it was suggested that,
alternator,
bad earth,
battery, may be the cause.
I checked the alternator, charging ok, battery ok. so I've been adding random earth leads under the bonnet, slight improvement, seems like something I'll have to live with.?

New problem Ian?

Probably earth or alternator related. Check the battery earth.

Alternator belt should be ok as it auto tensions.

An alternator produces alternating current (AC) and you want DC so inside the alternator is a a rectifier made up of some diodes and a regulator which controls the peak voltage output.

As the lights are flickering I would guess the rectifier or more probably one of the diodes has died of old age so you are getting a bit of AC coming through

Sorry to say a new alternator would be my guess Ian.

I'm with shopman Ian, spot on IMO.

A blown regulator or shorted diode will cause issues.
Both can be replaced, they are bolt ons.
Yellow pages for the local AC Delco / Bosch whatever refurbisher.
They can do you an exchange, or sell the parts.

May as well go service / exchange as they will likely sort out the bearings and give you some waranty.
You dont want to see the cost of a new one

PS- an alternator fault such as a blown votage regulator will cause overcharging of the battery.
Maybe why it killed the last one so dont leave it too long mate.

S.
