Default foot on clutch + petrol

do you need to put your foot on the clutch to start your car?

my Japan RHD version has a switched linked to the starter button - I guess this is to stop you jumping forward on the starter motor. It's the only car I have even driven with this feature.

I can't believe the number of variations Honda has made for each market on such small production numbers.

No key/alarm system came with the car - just this switch, but so far it has defeated all my friends when they try to start the car - so I guess I don't need an immobiliser after all.

&

What type of petrol are you using, I was reading Topgear and they said it needed Super-unleaded? I thought that was difficult to get hold of?

thanks - kobe.

Not sure about the clutch thing, I've always done it naturally as I was told when I was younger that it protected the engine i.e. no drag from the clutch plates

Honda recommend Super UL which is available at certain garages but not all, the car will run on normal UL but I've only done it once and I though the car was a bit jerky so I soon switched back.

I always start any car with the clutch depressed.

Super Unleaded is pretty common in the Midlands so no problems here.

No need to depress clutch on the car in the UK to start it, I do tend to depress the clutch in winter months more often than summer just to have a little less load on the battery when turning over though!

Super unleaded is quite easy to get hold of, but on the motorway they rip you off price wise, but locally I only pay 3p a litre more, what is hard / var nigh impossible to get hold of is 98 RON unleaded, all the major suppliers have 'downgraded' to 97 RON, however it was also at this time the price differential of plain to super reduced from ~20p a litre to just the few pennies, it was also when my Integra TypeR went from 95 to 97 in late 1998.

taught years ago to depress clutch when starting before getting into gear, . starter button will work wiithout depressing clutch.
tried ordinary UL for a couple of tankfuls, performance in town def. poorer, not so noticeable on motorways so I am now back to 97RON full time.

I don't understand the difference between starting the engine in neutral - and with the clutch depressed. I know if the idler gear or something is worn then it would have some difference and you can hear the engine note change slightly, but on a newish car?

Kobe, you've had a privileged past

With our erratically assembled old bangers, damp & cold winter mornings and electrics by Joe "Prince of Darkness" Lucas, any extra oil drag would drain the last amperes from your electrical system!

Thus we depress the clutch in the forlorn hope the bugger might just start.

Now we drive beautifully engineered machinery that fires on the first compression, old habits die hard.

good point!

actually all the cheap old cars I owned were light enough to push start on your own - Mini 850 was the best one ! just thinking it's whole engine power was less than 1/2 of one S2k cylinder
