Default Under Bonnet detailing - a blog

This is annoying me on both cars
this is the largely stock car, it was a daily for a long time but is now a strictly sun's out garage queen
The little Phillips bolts are annoying and complex, they have a sleeve to locate the plate, so a stepped shank but seize in place and strip when you try to remove them as you can see
will drill/Dremel these out later

The plate itself sits in water for a car living outside as the SC one does

Start point on NA

Not really good enough to make look perfect easily so I bought a new one from Tegiwa for about £25

well 2 actually

Now I wanna rust proof them so thinking powder coat.. or I could spray them some more - I know the honda paint is pants
I ordered stainless fasteners, M6 x 15 and will grease the threads and tidy up underneath when it's off
will update once it's all done
rad stays next, I plan to progress back, tidying it all

M6 stainless bolts and washers, ( big washers) fit fine as I recall, that’s what’s on mine

The irony - I've just bought a UK plate holder to re-install on my aftermarket bumper because it just looks so much more 'finished'.

I used the same as Chippo but with fancy washers, also they're not Philips head bolts they're JIS. I bought a set of JIS screwdrivers this year and its amazing the fit difference between that and a Philips head on JIS bolts.

Took them to be powder coated this week
they stripped them.

Rusty under the paint

I guess this would cause poor adhesion, poor coverage and the subsequent rampant rust I have experienced on these in both cars

anyway, out with the old on the SC as it heads to MOT

The other car was harder as the OEM Phillips bolts were still on it
tried cutting slots, no joy, the metal just gave way

Stud extractor worked but one snapped, I got the rest out with a bit of ****ery

Then I realised I'd put the other one in upside down.. doh
Both on now with liberal ACF50

2 students then

So onwards with tidying under the hood I removed the cam cover and started to strip it
I used frost strip gel as I heard a lot of complaints about paint stripper from a DIY shop and it was very effective, just lots of nooks and crannies
before

This is OEM 2001 vintage

During (the odd crannie yet to do but 95%).. it's drying in the kitchen as it won't in the garage this time of year I guess

Next is home brew electro plating (of bolts) and paintshop.. I don't think it will fit in my oven for curing alas
