Default Handbrake Adjustment.

I recently asked about causes of my high fuel consumption and in the list of causes was binding brakes, I've stripped and cleaned the fronts and rears as I did notice a slight reluctance to roll when the car/brakes were hot. Everything was pretty much ok, one set of pads on the rear where a bit sticky but cleaned up fine, wound the pistons in (nice and free) and coppa slipped all over, everything works fine except the handbrake has a bit more travel than I remember, is this not self adjusting with the brakes? Or have I not been paying enough attention before and it was always the same.?

See the service manual for details of how to adjust it. Essentially there's a nut underneath the centre console.

After you had wound the rear pistons in did you pull the hand brake on before you had pumped up the foot brake

I have just adjusted mine Martin (had an advisory on the MOT - too much travel). It was dead easy, removed the centre console (which just unclipped using my fingers and no tools), jacked up the back wheels and adjusted the nut under the console. Pull the hand brake on one notch first until it just starts to bind when you spin the rear wheels. Replace the console and it's job done. 10 minutes tops

Nope, did one side at a time, pumped up brakepedal to bring the pistons/pads into place then spun the wheel to check it was clear before doing the other side.

I had the car out for a bit of a run yesterday and all ok now, seems the rear pistons require a bit of a workout to fully extend? to their working position(to do with the adjustment method) and all is normal again, thanks for the words peeps.
