Its a stock 99 engine with full service history on 93,000 miles. I'm guessing it must of overheated at some point? The garage I took it too have apprently done 2-3 headgaskets before on S2000's? I'm guessing its not common.

Symtoms are sweet smell from exhaust, some white smoke, slight miss fire and CEL light on, plus coolant being lost slightly.
Certainly sounds like a blown head gasket so i'm guessing the diagnosis by the garage is correct.

My money is on the engine being overheated just before you bought it and being sold on before the problem became apparent.

Oh right, I didn't see this post in-between (a case of light reading again :/)

Overheating is not a good thing on an alu block like the S2000 as aluminium gets very soft at high temperatures!!

They test the water for traces of exhaust gas that's how it's usually diagnosed, it sounds to me like a symptom of something else, I can't think how the ECU can throw a cel it has no way of detecting a leaking cylinder

But maybe if the o2 sensor is fouled by the water mixing in combustion?

Still think it needs a second opinion

If they've used a sniffer on the header tank / radiator and found exhaust gas then there's no need for one - I wouldn't expect a garage to diagnose it any other way if there's no other visible symptoms.
