Default Help me with some R&D

Ive been studying the engine bay and the the stock airbox on the s2k.

Now originally my train of thought was to modify the stock airbox cutting out the inside wall and the ducting on the inside of the lid. Then i would fit a stainless steel intake arm from the thottle body directly into the airbox and have an Apexi cone filter on the end. I would also cut off and seal the resonator section.

Due to the reasonable amount of work involved ive decided against this but may still do it and dyno test it just an option for s2k owners.

What im aiming for now is fabricating a completly new airbox from stainless steel. This will sit in place o the stock box and a similar idea to idea above.

From the inlet throttle body, a polished stainless steel intake arm, into the stainless airbox and an Apexi cone/HKS muchroom etc filter. The box will be polished to reflect heat on the outside and painted black inside. Now the lid could either be polished stainless or for the under the hood bling factor i could fabricate some form of sealed edge with a transparent perspex or similar lid.

Now i just need to ask someone who know, due to A: Its 9.50pm and B: my tools are not here,

Q: What is the inlet throttle body size? (stock car, mm or inches)

ID is 62mm.

What you are suggesting is trumped by a wing mounted intake anyway

What are you trying to achieve with the mods?

The common conclusion is that the OEM intake is pretty good at feeding cool air.

Most people just mod for a nice noise while trying not to sacrafice power.

I would give anything HKS a wide berth in terms of filtering too!

Oh no, dont worry. I was just using HKS as a for instance. HKS + filtering = fail.

The basic idea with this is basically as follows. Long arm intake are great, when u live in a hot climate and notone that floods on any regular basis.

This box would provide an alternative for cool fresh air and also a neat look under the hood. Im also willing to bet the noise of the vtec shift inside a metal casing with a metal intake pipe would also sound crazy.

Im going to do it either way, but how many people might be interested in one of these? Providing they dont look shit etc etc. lol

Well I think getting any more power is going to be very very hard - so it would have to appeal to people from making a nice noise / feeding cool air point of view to be desirable.

Done all the mods you suggest to the OEM box except the metal pipe
I would think no mater what you do to a stainless box it will get warmer than plastic
Try keeping the intake tube streight and around 350 mm long with a bell mouth taking air from a filter box and filter panel, the cold air should be fed from behind the false brake ducts.

Me and Steven have done this.

IMHO you wouldnt really see any gain if minimal though my views are purely theorectical and based on what i have done in the past (hard to show on dyno's )

Your removing the internal obstruction on the pipe which is good ie ridges but i think your not really going to see any gains.

You'd be better heat shielding the entire box, removing resonator wall maybe keeping the stock filter as its actually quite good, adding a feed from the LHS enclosed to the fender hole (houses the headlights etc), and possibly adding a gutted snorkle.

IMO stock induction system is very good to begin with but it can be improved upon.

Personally now i cant be bothered pissing about with the car, and spending more money.

go for it.
