Default insurance question

query - I need to drive a car that has no insurance. My insurance allows me to drive other cars with third party cover.

I've checked with the broker (Adrian Flux) and the person I spoke to was adamant that I'm covered to drive the car.

I always thought the car had to have a minimum of 3rd party cover in place before you were allowed to drive it.

Any people in the know that can confirm?

Regards

Carl

AFAIK from a legal perspective the insurance policy is for the person rather than the car, the cars you can drive being specified by the terms of the policy. If the insurer says you're covered then you are, get it in writing if you need concrete proof. If you have full comp cover this usually does give third party cover on other vehicles.

With most insurance companies if your over 25 and fully comp on your car then that entitles you to 3rd party insurance on any other car.

I'm sure it does not matter if the car is insured or not, if their was an accident you are claiming for the cost of the 'third party' only. It would not matter if the car was insured with some one else or not as the cliam has nothing to do with any one else except you, your insurance company and the third party.

Hope this helps

But the car needs to be insured to be on the road. Hence the need for a certificate when you tax it. You need to cover situations such as the handbrake failing and the car rolling down the hill into someone/something.

If you only needed one fully comp insurance to have any car on the road I wouldn't need another policy for my beater

You'd only be insured for 3rd party, so any damage to that car, if proven to be your fault wouldn't be covered. Also if it got nicked or went on fire it wouldnt be covered. But 3rd party is enough insurance legally to drive it.
