GT also has the hardtop brackets, modified brushes, wiring for heated screen, harder front catchers but any car can be modded to GT spec

I would do what arsie is saying. A really low miles collectable will cost you £20k plus now, the market ain't cheap

Storing cars aint free. A 5% return annually will equate to over 60% in ten years and you can get that on any low risk REIT so why take the (significant imo) risk with a car?

buy a 40k miles example, cherish it and you may run it for years without depreciation, like a lotus exige over the last 5 years for example

There may be similar but better investment cars than the S2k, one of the modern classic BMW's? ...TVR? ...Maxda RX7? There was a thread on PH recently about a Clio V6 for £60k already!

The only reason I'd buy another S2k is as a spare if my existing one expires for any reason. I'm holding off buying a spare as storage is a problem and plenty of people seem confident enough that you can cherish one and keep it working. The best reason I can find for a spare is if I crashed the first one (very real possibility if you drive it as intended), the next being the future availability of engines.

Overall, I think the S2k is for people who've really gelled with the car and really appreciate it. Someone apparently had an "automotive love affair" with theirs so that gives you an idea of the cult following.

The biggest problem long term is rust, so get that addressed before anything else.

Also, do not do lots of track days

i do see some merit in your idea but personally i would not do it
yes you will get the enjoyment out of the car you drive but you will still need to service and maintain the garage queen
it will still cost you like the used version. - people tend to forget this. garage queens need to be serviced more regularly than cars being used!
then you also run the risks of having a car sitting not being used. these things are meant to be driven. its mechanical they need lubricated. there is fluids that need moving, flushed etc
you do more harm than good to a car letting it sit for long periods of time. simply cranking the engine over from time to time and leaving it running for 15 mins is not the answer or a wee run down the driveway etc

I have been fortunate to own an NSX (still do) and I enjoy driving it. i have done a major engine refresh on it (24 year old car) and the best advice the specialist said to me is to drive it more. the engines need working etc
i have reduced the mileage on it but as i said i have been instructed not to do this ... but the reduced mileage has happened due to owning an S as well!

so you need to weigh this all up!

as discussed above you have all the other issues to contend with regarding garage queens

the car market in terms of investment at the moment is crazy ... i personally dont see it lasting or certainly at the levels things are at currently

the real collector cars in terms of S2000's are the real low mileage ones and they are big money and there is ? in terms of maintaining that value down the line

just do your research ... it all sounds great in theory and a lot of people on here would probably jump at the chance in putting their cars away in the hope to make a quick buck
but they are a car like the NSX that was built to be driven and honestly life is too short mate ... enjoy what you buy cause you dont know what happens from one day to the next

Wouldn’t really call an s2k and investment but you’re certainly not going to loose shed loads of money on it , if you buy the right one ..... when you consider the amount a Bmw m4/2 has dropped in value over the last year .... the depreciation would buy a very nice S2k ! It’s eye watering the amount some cars loose but I guess no one buys cars anymore .. it’s all about the monthly payments! I had a spare 20k and bought a z4m coupe to run along side my S2k ... again it’s not an investment but it’s a whole lot more fun than having 20k in the bank !! And even if the value of my cars goes down a bit , it’s nothing compared to newer stuff .

I am in the same predicament - so couldn't agree more!

Especially since cars tend not to go up in value - fiat currency depreciates in value over the decades and that gives the illusion.
