Booked in for investigation tomorrow
The guys who run a rolling road would be better to diagnose knocking like this.
They normally have 'det-cans' - earphones they connect up to a knock sensor on the engine.
Then if you load up the engine on a rolling-road, they can clearly hear the knocking/pre-iginition.

Maybe you are running a little lean on fuel mixture, there are several potential causes and it may be a simple air leak somewhere, or a dodgy sensor.

Had hissing noise all the way to the garage especially if coasting in 3rd at 3000rpm then too faint at garage to detect. They are going to take it from cold when it goes in for the seats and service.

Update from Honda.
Engine stripped down, debris in sump again.
Honda UK have seen pictures and believe it's the same issue - movement in the crank, leading to damage and swarf in the sump.

Current proposal:- Replace the short engine again.
I'm aiming to get the engine number of the new engine this time, before it's fitted.
But given the range of engine numbers I'm aware of, not sure whether that'll help.

In numeric order:-
F20C20108020 (my new engine, just failed, 21k miles on engine)
F20C21080571 (Jenson)
F20C21080681 (my old engine, 9k miles)
F20C21090153 (Snowy)

Any suggestions on what I should be asking for and/or doing?

If they still made the S2000, I'd be asking for a new one....as supplied vehicle not fit for purpose?

I'm no expert but rather than the engine(s), could this be something else? Moreover the way it is mounted/chassis?

Yup I agree, if your ever up in the lakes again give me a shout.

My mate uses detcans and knock sensor, however 'to a certain extent' you can tell if there is 'knock' just by looking at the curve.

Is it just a matter of time then before all late S' suffer from engine failure? With production now ceased, i guess there will be a finite nu,ber of F20's on the shelf.

Perhaps you could ask for the new Jazz lump? better mpg, better reliability (by the sounds of it) although you might lack a bit of top end punch.

A bit worrying really and seemingly a sad way for the S to bow out. Honda must be bricking it and hopeing all the 3 year warranties expire asap...

I would still be arguing that the engien was not fit for purpose post 3 years if it suffered such failure after this time. With the seeminlgy 'common' porblem that is being swept up under warranty, those poor soles that see out the 3 years trouble free then see their engine let go are likely to get a very cold shoulder from Honda.

anyone want to take a bet on a recall? 100/1???

Perhaps the crank is made from tofu in the persuit of economy?

Nervous times for us 08/09 owners, as would have no confidence in a new engine anyway as seemingly they all came off the same production line....

Flappy crank would do it, or the bores don't line up
