Just had new engine installed
Hi guys,
Last September I had a new engine put into my car by a breakers in leeds for a cash deal
I did it because money wasn't exactly plentiful and it was £1500 cheaper than getting it down in the Bournemouth / Southampton area.
I was told by the garage that it was a 2006 engine with 18k miles on the clock however after months of chasing them, ringing up literally daily, they've failed to produce the MCV document to prove it and I'm stuck with an engine that I don't have a clue about the history with.
Since the first time I took the engine into vTec I noticed this metallic resonating noise only in first and second gear when the vTec kicks in during hard acceleration, there is no loss of power. The noise only occurs when the car is in motion, not even when the car is stationary and revved with the clutch down. I've had it checked and looked by 3 garages including Honda who needed it booked in for a whole day for stupid money to not even guarantee they can fix it or identify the problem (Horizon Honda in Poole). Therefore I've turned to my mates who noticed that the Engine Exhaust Manifold Heat Shield was cracked (probably since the engineer who installed this new engine didn't tighten the bolts to the correct torque)
After getting a replacement heatshield mentioned above the sound seems to have improved a bit but its still there!
Therefore I'm very lost and worried this could be something major wrong with the new engine put in or something under the bonnet.
Other than this both the car and engine are fine!
Can anyone offer some help or advice to nail what the problem is? I don't have access to a rolling road so anything else I can try?

If it improved when adjusting the heatshield, and they managed to fit that wrong, it's likely they haven't fitted something else correctly.
Check the black heatshield (especially the last bolt near the bulkhead, and the silver one over the manifold itself)
There is a support bolt / bracket further down on the manifold, under the car which would be worth a look too.
I would doubt it's the engine, and think it's more likely to be a resonance.

I've also had the brake lines vibrating against the heatshield, that was a very faint rattle at lowing rpms, sounded like Gaspodes death rattle.
My exhaust developed a nasty rattle at about 5000 rpm it was very hard tell it was the exhaust from inside the car.
