Default Oil Change - Filter stuck

Hello,

I am halfway through an oil change and cant get the old filter off. Any ideas.

I have an oil filter wrench from halfrauds, its like a band one with some rubber/sponge around it. It grips/then slips before the filter turns.

I have given the filter a good clean to remove and oil or dirt and have tried again.

I am now leaving the oil to drain overnight, sump plug out and going to tackle it again in the morning.

And advice?

Try a clamp, like this one

Has an adjustable arm, the band tools are crap IMO.

I used a band tool and had no luck, then i tried this above worked great. If all else fails and i dont really recommend it pierce the filter with a screw driver right through and turn it to pull it off, it will wreck the filter but your replacing anyways

Wedge something inbetween the strap and the filter, like an extension bar,try another type of wrench ,if not wack a screwdriver through the filter and lever off,and last of all use a hammer and chisel but be careful tap the lip of the filter around near to were it seals onto to engine!

Not wanting to put a dampner on your oil changing efforts ! but this is exactly why machanics exist (yes i used to be one) and it frightens me that you are prepared to carry out such a task with clearly little experience.
Your oil is probably the most important aspect of your car maintenence, I hope you get it sorted tomorrow.
Yes a screwdriver through the side is usually the way for stuborn filters.
When you re-fit the filter and fill up with oil, turn the engine over a few times then let it settle and check the oil level again. It will have gone down slightly (into the filter) and will need a small top up, dont over fill . Good luck

Becareful sticking a screw driver through it, because if that doesn't help you remove it, you can't drive the car anywhere.

Make sure you tighten the new filter in line with the instructions on the side of the canister (these filters need to be torqued down further than "hand tight" to prevent them coming loose and causing serious problems).
