To be honest, it's one of the reasons why I changed my MY03 for an MY05. After 4 years I got fed up of checkign the oilevery 2-3 days.
My understanding is that these engines were hand made to a degree, therefore some use more or less than others.
I ended up putting Petronas Syntium in it - decent quality synthetic oil that you can get from Euro Car parts at a reasonable price.
Alter your checking style to after every tank of fuel, as the manual says and you'll be fine.

Also - make sure you check the oil when the engine is "WARM".
You get a huge difference wen checking cold - I see about 200ml difference cold to warm.
I have in he past over filled mine as I checked it when it was cold, saw it was low and topped it up!
Minvo.

I find mine doesn't use any for the first 3000 miles after service, then drinks heavily. Probably a good indicator to oil change every 4500, which is what happens to mine.

Cold is fine... as long as you have allowed the oil to settle for a while. If you've just turned the engine over, left it cold and then expect the oil level to be right then there's no chance, as it will take a while to drain back down.
Warm/hot is also fine.

I did check the oil through out the change. Fired it up, make sure it's in the filter properly, let it settle and constant checks/filling till at the top. I'm pretty anal about oil changes. Just never imagined that it would burn its way through oil like it does
