I just need to know this. If, in the U.K. there is no failsafe, and you can start your car in gear, wouldn't you have cars hopping about like bunnies from people with remote starters?

I remember when Citroen Xantia's had a similar problem.
When we were living in Edinburgh, we lived on a cross-roads on a fairly steep slope. Our neighbour (up the hill) was showing off his new Citroen to us as we walked past. Towards the end of his lecture he turned away for a second to pick up his keys which he had dropped. When he bent over there was this loud crack and he stood up quickly and looking around. Sure enough, his Citroen was rolling down the hill towards they cross roads, narrowly missing a milk-float (that would have looked spectacular in hindsight) and embedded itself in the nearest lampost.
Blimey! You hould have heard the man swear!
