Just kidding OH
cost (tolls etc) this all depends on which route to take down to Italy? You can do it on the cheap if you head into Germany and skirt down the west side of it onto Switzerland. If you prefer to go through France this could cost you dear! unfortunately I've only done the German way, so cannot give you any exact prices for tollsAs for stop over’s, a very good hotel I've used is the Hotel Sonnenhof in Perl, Germany (just south east of Luxemburg). Extremely helpful and friendly staff, nice and quiet and very reasonably priced for a very well appointed and modern hotel.

With so many different operators, the costs vary, not only country to country, but within some countries. As a very rough guide I would think you would spend about £50 if you use toll roads, only, both to, and from, the north of Italy. The most expensive stretch I have been on is the short toll across the Millau Viaduct.
Curiously, I cannot remember ever paying a toll in Italy itself! I suggest research online will give you the most reliable answers to the routes you intend to take.
However, I suggest you look at the Caxton fx prepaid Eurocard. This will save you money, and is much quicker through toll booths than cash.

I didn't drive to Italy (I'm from the states) but while I was there, I stayed in Bologna, Stressa and Monza. I'm not sure what you want to see while in Italy or how far you're willing to drive but Stressa was great for a small town.
right for France take sat nav, insert postcode and select avoid toll roads, we did this and had the most fantastic FREE blast across France as a result. Roads are deserted or LIGHT traffic and I am talking weekend prior to Easter here when you might expect it to be busy.
There is a web page for Italian tolls to cost them out, http://www.autostrade.it/en/index.html
Look at the Mile Miglia route for Italy and ideas and again use sat nav avoid tolls option seems to work a treat, except where major cities are involved then either suck it up or skirt them on the autostrada
Enjoy

Was in Pompei 2 months ago, went sleasyjet! I can recommend the Hotel Forum http://www.hotelforum.it in Pompei, lots of good comments about it on Tripadvisor. 3 min walk from the entrance to the ruins, but hidden from the main street and nice tranquil location.
Just don't get the room on the ground floor next to the bar - easy to find, but a bit noisy.

Well, I've just driven trough France up from Italy and I paid €0 in tolls using all the French Autoroutes! They were on strike, nice one, I reckon thats around €60 saved just there.
Mind you, 98RON fuel is €1.5 a liter!

I did this last year & was through Mont Blanc well within 2 days (including Southampton - Dover - Calais). Plenty of Vtecing with overtaking & didn't miss any of the sights.
