This again sounds very much like Cat starting to fail. But certinaly worth a look at the surround heat sheilds to make sure they're not making contant

I'm planning on getting her up on ramps at the weekend and having a poke around. The weather's too lousy to be driving it this week and the light's too poor by the time I'm at home (no garage at the current digs). I've been checking out cats on ebay etc (and the threads on S2KI) in case I do need one. Although I'm planning on tracking her I don't have a sympathetic mechanic and I suspect a HFC wouldn't pass muster, so it'll have to be an OEM or equiv. for me. There seems to be precious little info about / reviews by anyone using some of the non-OEM ones that are "type approved" for S2Ks on ebay; I'd be interested to hear if there's anyone about these parts who has done so - the BM91006H seems to show up a lot and it's one hell of a lot cheaper than even the used OEMs...
So, I put her up on some ramps. (I hate using ramps, it's going to be jack stands all the way for me from here on out). I started WD40ing the heat shield bolts with the expectation that I would need to remove it to replace the cat inside, and got to the last one on the far side when I found this:
Looks like something has sheared a chunk of the bolt hex head off. A poke confirms that it rattles, and holding it in place and giving the rest of the shield or exhaust a knock suggests that it no longer rattles
I think this _used_ to be a nut and bolt

New M6 x 16 bolt, washer, and flanged nut.
I took her out for a quick spin before they gritted the roads and lo, no 'orrible rattling sound!
Aaaand it's neighbour has died as well, and been replaced. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way of removing these appallingly corroded bolts? I'd be a bit worried drilling them, there's not really enough room to get a dremel on the job (with my current cutting tips anyway), and pliers just won't get purchase.
It only takes 15 minutes to take the cat off. Much easier to do the job off the car on a work bench.
That's the theory, but when the bolts are as corroded as the ones attaching the cat to the rest of the exhaust system and I don't have the parts to replace, I'm too afraid to!
