Default Rust in the boot, help please.

Hello all. I have rust on the floor of the boot created by a bad leak. I've bought Kurust to treat it but would like to know if I should remove the black plastic/rubber/leather sheet (in the picture).

Do you think the rust could be forming underneath it?

And, if so, how do I remove it?

Thanks,

Royce

I had the same problem, but caught it early on.

I had to pull up the sound deadening material at the bottom of the wheel well as it had trapped water underneath it. Yours doesn't look as bad as mine however, I really did have a pool down there.

Once it was rubbed down, treated, primed and sprayed I didn't bother replacing it. I'd advise you remove some small areas to get an idea if the metal underneath is okay. I used a scraper to lift up the edge, it really does peel away in small chunks then.

Find the source of water that is causing the rust.

Leave the boot carpet out and leave your S in the rain for an hour or so, then trace where it's leaking from.

I'd bet it's the rain rail/black trim round the back of the roof/boot vent that is the source of the problem.

You may also need to clear your hood drains...have a look for one of my thread's by searching for 'boot leak'.

Yea that's the one I read when looking up the problem . I believe it's the same problem. The water does seem to be coming from that area. The hood drains do seem clear, but will give em a clean out too. Thus buying the hardtop has come at a good time, until I can get this fixed.

If your roof moulding is fecked, you can pick one up cheap here on fleabay:

Mods: This is not me, nor do I have any affiliation with this eBay seller

It's not a difficult part to change once you have removed the interior trim and removed the rain rail from the studs.

Loftust - i'm getting my roof replaced by the chap in Swansea in around a month, and am still on the first roof (12yr old car).

Are there any cheap replacements worth doing - like getting a rain rail/black trim, or the roof moulding for him to whip off and replace. And if they're fine, then maybe get a refund?

1) Are they basic swaps considering he's doing the whole roof anyway?
2) Where's the best place to get a rain rail? Honda/Hendy's?

Any thoughts buddy as you are the guru on the topic? I know my drains are fine, but do get the occasional dribble (expect it to be rain rail having read your post before).

POG - i'm no rust expert but in the past i'd wire brush the rush to leave a clean surface then apply some hammerite. And then some waterproof tar-like stuff - loads of it!

Mine was the same, i poked it with a screw driver and it made a hole. I removed all the rust top and bottom with a grinder and there wasnt much metal left at all! Haha
