HI All
just a quick one, i may stand corrected on this but has any one used the following tarrif when importing goods from the US...
Section XVII
Vehicles, aircraft, vessels and associated transport equipment (chapters 86 to 89)
87
Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof
08
Parts and accessories of the motor vehicles of headings 8701 to 8705 Other parts and accessories Other Other Other
99 97 90
Other
OverviewImportExportFootnotes
Overview
Import
The commodity code for importing is 8708999790.
Importing from outside the EU is subject to a third country duty of 3.50 %.
Goods are subject to VAT standard rate.
Export
The commodity code for exporting and intrastat reporting is 87089997.
My colleague at work in our logistics department just pointed this out to me, obviously a big difference to the 20 % usually paid.
thanks

For car parts, expect 4.5% duty, and then 20% vat on top of price + duty.
Example:
Exchange rate is $1.51 to £1
Item costs $200, delivery is $50
Total cost is $250, or 250/1.51 = £165.56
Cost Including Duty is 1.045 x 165.56 = £172.95
Cost including VAT is 1.2 x 172.95 = £207.54
HTH.

think you still get a non-EU personal tax free allowance (£140?) - Gordon Brown did promise to raise that when PM but caved in to EU who were worried UK would become a funnel for tax-free goods to Europe. Only problem is, go over the limit and you pay the above mentioned import duty plus VAT (including on the duty - tax on tax - supposed to be illegal in EU...)on the WHOLE amount - not the amount over the allowance. Strange how these rules don't apply to the C-list celebs and footballer's WAGs who come back from New York with bags of designer goods.....

Yes, you will more than likely get a bill from the courier company in a few weeks' time.

And you have to pay a release fee to get it from the Border Agency. ParcelForce pay £8 then pass it on to the customer. I've just had two items from the states and part from the VAT I also had £8 added to bill.
