Default "Tinny" at the bottom end

I'm due a service, and up until now during my ownership (2 years) I've gone for a simple fluids change and general TGM guidance.

The engine does seem to be increasingly "rattley" right at the very bottom end of the rev range/tick over (I know the engine is quite "mechanical" anyway) so am starting to think what, for piece of mind as much as anything else, should I also have done/changed, over and above a minor service?? (car currently just over 100k, 2 years in my ownership)
I changed the diff oil and brake fluid not long ago.

Thanks guys

Chris

For me it was the bearings in the idler pulley that caused a lot of weird rattley noises low down, so check that and the tensioner pulley for play. The other noise I had was the catalyst loose in it's can which sounded just like a heat shield rattle.

Thanks guys. I too had a rattley cat, but recently fitted an HFC.

When should one think about valve clearance??

Strangely the gaps normally close up over time making the engine quieter, although when I did mine is definitely brought more smoothness to the running at idle. I did mine when I bought the car but I think the service interval is something like 25K miles

27k miles or 3 years - see the service schedule in the FAQ.

Check your oil level and condition.

Dirty old oil and/or not enough of it can make the car sound almost diesel-esque...
