Torque for Android - Video and Data
Using a go pro is another option stuck with one of the base plates it comes with to the secret compartment. I like this as it has external mic input (go pro 2) and can do really wide angles, I don't even use its widest setting bit watch the vtec tunnel video someone has posted in the main forum a few down from this at the minute and you get the idea.
Then I just have the phone sitting in compartment behind the gear stick set to data only mode. Its a few minute job in race render to sync the video to the data, very easy.

How do you go about syncing the video to the data chaps, by eye? and how do you power both the GOpro and the phone, some sort of splitter from the cigarette lighter power socket?

Video camera runs fine off its battery and I just use a single connector for the phone. GoPro batteries are pretty good I believe.
I have a twin usb charger from ebay, a griffin one. One goes to the gopro 2 (the first one was ok on batteries, the new one chews through them and went flat on my first track day with it). I use the other to keep the phone topped up during the later part of the day whilst still being able to send juice to the gopro. Rather than buy the skeleton case for the gopro I just drilled holes in the side of the plastic case to get the usb cord to it
Syncing, there is a tool in racerender to select a file and shift it forwards and back, my camera has the rev counter showing so its quite easy to sync especially if you press record on both within a second or so.

Got some reasonable data from Torque today although I forgot to set up the data saving properly so just got the GPS data (from the external unit) which is superbly accurate to 10Hz.
Will try and sort some test video (from both the Track recorder and an external camera) tomorrow.

The Torque Test went well.
Both "Data-only" from the basic app and "Video and Data" from the Pro version Track Recorder all uploads perfectly well into RaceRender (with some telling RacerRender where to look for things). Got GPS, G-meter, RPM, Speed (OBD), Throttle position, Coolant Temp and a few other bits.
RaceRender also lets you add laps in, so while you won't be getting live lap times at the circuit, you can check them out afterwards (which is what you should be doing anyway as timing's generally not allowed on UK Trackdays).
I have an Excel Spreadsheet which calculates what Gear is being used, so that can be added to the data files and displayed in RaceRender.
I'll see if I can get something loaded up to Google Docs so you can all use it.
If anyone wants my S2000 RaceRender Template, PM me and I can email it to you.

That sounds really good. It does everything you need then by the sounds of it.
With the gear spreadsheet you just add that as an extra file?
Could you email me the spreadsheet or post a link? I had the tyre circumference incorrect on my track day so the gears are out. alap calculates it as it records by the ooks of it so I'm stuck with the wrong gears but I am thining if I point racerender to this file I can get the correct ones then...
I've not found a way to do sector times in racerender though. Alaprecorder lets you add sectors and then shows you a table with sector times. It would be great to have that in the final vids, I don't think that can be done though.

I'll get the spreadsheet tidied up a bit, but there's an area where you can enter your gear ratios/wheel size etc, and then an area below that where you copy the rpm and speed columns from your existing aLap/Torque file.
Then you copy down the gear calculation formula in an adjacent column. You'd then copy the newly created gear column back into your original data file in a new column, titled "Gear", and point RaceRender at it.
I'll see if I can get it uploaded to Google Docs at some point.
I'm afraid I can't help on sector times but it'd be possible to work those out in Excel, based on the GPS co-ordinates.

Update to this - I'm no longer using aLap as it's not being supported, although the free version is still around, so it;s not bad on that front.
Going to use Torque instead, along with my new camcorder which has a lovely wide angle lens.
Torque's Tracker Recorder plug in does work very well too, and if you want an all-in-one solution, that's a good alternative.
I would however thoroughly recommend getting Race Render (and a paid version at that) as it makes the whole video making process so much easier.
