Default Use as a daily

How many of you use the S as your daily driver?

I am currently 'trying' to save for a house but weighing up whether to get a beater or continue to use the S daily. Only downside is I don't have a garage.

Lots of people do, and lots of people buy winter beaters.

Your best bet is to do some calculations with regards to cost. You'll have to maintain, tax and insure any second car, as well as finance it in some way (loss of interest on savings). You may save some fuel costs, but how much depends on how far you drive every day.

And so on.

I did - for almost 4 years. It only became an expensive issue when the commute went up to 40 miles each way and i didin't care for the mileage / wear and tear it was putting on the car.

Used it all year around, the last couple of winters it was on winter tyres and 16" wheels - quite drivable even in adverse conditions.

That said, wish i'd bought the Aygo i now have at the outset - it would have saved a fortune in fuel and running costs.

Your call!

The biggest problem at the minute is that although the S is paid for I am spending on average £250 a month on fuel. I am 100% sure that with a 1.0 or 1.2 petrol or possibly a diesel (may not be worth while as do a lot of low mileage stop-start journeys) I wouldn't spend even half that.

I think the biggest problem is obviously with an older car is maintenance and reliability issues etc. that and the cost of 2 MOTs, taxes and insurance. Fairly sure the overall cost per month will be cheaper, after initial outlay of buying second car.

Thinking less than a £1000. Any suggestions for potential cars? thought of the obvious clio/corsa. Couldnt car less about colour/age etc. main focus is economy so cheap insurance, tax and running costs.

Cheers

Yeah I have winter tyres on OEM wheels but its more like you the wear and tear (want to keep the S nice for longer, hard without a garage but easier when not driving as much) and of course the finicial side i.e. reduce running costs.

Thanks

If you are spending that much on fuel, then lease a C1/Aygo/107 or Up/Citigo/whatever the SEAT version is called. Somewhere around £100 each month.

Car is warrantied, frugal, no tax, low insurance and should prove reliable.

I lease a Citroen C1 and the money saved in fuel over using the S as a daily driver covers the cost of the Citroen and it's insurance.

Small city cars are fun too

I daily mine, and last winter I did it on winter tyres. It was hateful. Drives like crap on winter tyres and was just generally a waste of the car.

I'm weighing up options for this year, I'd quite like to get a 2nd car. Something big and cossetting for the winter months would be nice I think. I also dont like the risk of people skidding into me in the snow/ice.. But then its all money.... hmmmm..

I'm looking at doing that this winter provided some decent deals some up. Although I'd want something more akin to a Fiesta though
