Entirely plausible.

The electrickery is complex and all it takes is for it to get a reading off some sensor that is out of parameter.

May not necessarily trigger the CEL.

I would be tempted to reset the ECU if there is no fault code shown.

Cold engine or low oil.

From memory, that's a water temp indicator not oil, so it will show three bars before the oil is up to optimum working temp.
Didn't I get shouted down for suggesting this a couple of weeks ago?

Mine allows vtec at 2 bars

which is pretty cold.

My other car (m3) has water and oil temp gauges. Full revs available after about 5mins driving. But the oil temp doesnt hit 'peak' until about 15mins of combined driving.

Also bear in mind your engine can indicate hot, but the fluids of your gearbox and diff could still be cold.

Hey guys, right well been for a drive and all seems well again. Vtec seems to kick in just peachy! I did reset the ECU and I did top up the oil, have to say the oil was low. Don't know what it was and what fixed it but all seems to be in working order now touch wood. But thanks for the help and advice, as usual very helpful. Just to make it clear though I'm not a complete retard and I do have some respect for our beloved S2. When I say it was ragged from cold I mean there were 2 bars showing and it had only been parked up for twenty mins after a 40 min drive. So a little naughty but not criminal lol Cheers

Done exactly the same but soon learnt on here it was a No, No. I was just too eager to hit VTEC.

Was 'racing' my friend in his MR2 the other day and he sped off - when I met him at the pub, he gave me grief for not flooring it - told him (in his opinion way too sensibly) that I was waiting for it to warm up before I gave it some welly and the road was wet so there was no way I was going round a roundabout the way he had.

Now where did I put that Volvo brochure......
