Talking poor performance in vtec

over the last week or so on my drive home i felt the car not pulling smoothly in vtec in 2nd and 3rd gear. i've also felt that my fuel economy seemed to ha ve got worse.

there is one particular stretch of road that i put my foot down on every night and it was on this stretch that i noticed that the car seemed almost to lurch forward and backwards as the revs rose through vtec. initally i thought it was just a bumpy stretch of road, but last night i experimented on other bits of road and could definitely feel the lurching.

it was quite strange, almost as if the engine was dropping in and out of vtec. the power would be there, go for a split second, return and then go again. i tried constant throttle and slight slow downs with the revs in the vtec zone and there seemed to be a distinct reduction in power as the revs dropped slightly, again as if it was dropping out of vtec at about 7-7.5k revs.

anyway, i went home, checked the oil (there was plenty), removed the map sensor and checked for muck in it (there was none) and gave it a tap. this has seemed to cure the problem and it was not at all apparent when i road tested shortly afterwards and again this morning.

i suppose my question is:

is the map sensor on the way out? should i replace it or does the tap sort it out indefinitely? what exactly has failed? is it a poor connection or something else wrong with the map sensor.

i don't want to be tapping the map sensor every week to keep the car running properly.

In 3 years I have tapped my MAP sensor twice and it has cured what seem to be similar symptoms.

Once was after a 3 week stand while we were on holiday, the other for no apparent reason at all.

Be gentle with it, disconnect it..clean all the connections, tap it gently and reconnect.

It'll do it no harm..and you'd never know.

Lower mine seems to feel somewhat the same at the moment, I commented to my wife last night that the Car felt down on power and was drinking fuel.
I'll take a look at the Map sensor as you suggest Shipley.

Where is the map sensor? Is there an FAQ or similar thread on how to check and maintain it. As you'll note from my other threads my car seems gutless above 7500rpm - maybe this is a factor

Wheel spin sometimes feels like that when you've booted it on a slippy or bumpy road?

reading through some of the info on the link by shipley it appears i have a relatively mild form of the map sensor problem. the tap appears to have fixed it and hopefully it won't come back for a while.

I believe there's actually a TSB fix for the MAP sensor problem that involves cables ties?

Here it is
