Default Winter Rubber

Hi Folks,

Having just bought an '08 GT I'm finding this forum an invaluable source of information!

I'm living in the wilds of Aberdeenshire, where weeks of lying snow are a given, so winter tyres are an absolute essential for me. I've been searching the forum on winter wheels and tyres, and it seems that my best option would be to pick up an old set of 16" OEM alloys for winter driving. I see the tyre sizes for the 16" are 205/55/R16 on the front and 245/45/R16 on the rear. The fronts seem to be available in winter tyres but I'm not seeing anything for the rears.

I would be interested to hear what size of tyres others are running during the winter months.

Many thanks
Andy

225/50 r16 will be fine for rear winter tyres. In fact a narrower profile will help in snow anyway. I have these on my winter set. They are a lot easier to get hold of too.

my local place says october is the time to start looking to buy.
i have some 16" accord alloys for the job; i hope the center hub hole is big enough for the S2000; something i didnt consider.
the other weekend i found out that the S2000 front wheels wont physically fit on the rear! (test reasons)

Not Blizzaks actually (which don't seem to rate that well according to the tests these days)

I had Goodyears (Ultragrips) which I used with great success for a couple of years - those particular ones are discontined, so I bought the replacement model, but have yet to find some proper snow to test them on.

As above, you don't need the wider section in the winter (provided you remember the dry/damp grip is compromised and don't go tearing into a corner the way you might in the summer, expecting the car to stick .........)

Bag or two of sand in the boot also necessary IME to allow the tyres to grip better.

Are you sure? If you get a rear puncture, you're meant to put a front wheel on the back and the space saver on the front.

i put winter tyres on the S last year for the first time. it turned into a snow god. they were only cheapos. bit vague in the dry, better ride going back to 16s and bigger sidewalls (contrary to what your wife might say 1" is a lot)

sounds weird; dont it! alloy sat about 5mm away from the disc when i tried it. tbh, i didnt try too hard or measure it as i've never had issues in the past with the correct wheels on it, so presumed this was the case.
good point on the spare wheel thing... maybe it is me - i'll give it another go when i have the car jacked up...
