Just a thought really - I was quite heavily snowed in this morning, and needless to say, it was hairy driving down the main road near me...
the road goes down-hill, and is a tad twisty - I also have a few country lanes i use on the way home to cut traffic..
The road was hmm - mushy - this morning shall we shall. i was doing no more than 10mph (i hit a huge 16mph on the straight and shat myself!), but i would've said i was on a average of 6 mph - and yet even in 3rd gear (V.low revs), the car still started to fishtail with even the lightest acceleration..
history:
Geo has just been done by TGM about 1500 miles ago - so that should still be ok.
Fronts were changed earlier this year, and the rears last December - using RE50A's
Rears still have about 4mm on I would think so although starting to wear, i wouldn't say there were terrible.. they are much grippier than the S02's in these conditions for sure..
So im wondering, are there any winter tyres around that I should consider for these icy conditions that are going to become more common, or should I be thinking about possibly just sticking on another set of RE50A's for the rears?
Currently doing about 1000 miles a month, 80% of this motorway, the other being A/B roads.
mileage is probably due to drop somewhat after next month as the job role changes, but im guessing it will still be pushing 1K a month...
not an option im afraid mate - only have 1 car space at the flat, and i cant afford to insure two cars!
The S is my daily and will be for many years to come (hopefully )
It's not easy (or at least did not used to be) to find winter tyres that fitted the 16' in the right sizes.
I bought some Goodyear Ultragrip GW3s a few years back for my SO2s and fitted them to a spare set of wheels.
The tyres were terrific, but I have never tried them on my MY05 partly as the weather has not been as bad, and partly as the RE050s are much better in the snow.
Weight has quite an effect on the grip, so if your boot is not full, buy a bag or 2 of sand from B&Q and stick it in the boot - fits neatly in the hollow where the tools sit in the polystyrene block.
