emissions question
i came back to the suburbs of chicago for the summer and got an emissions notice. i have a berk test pipe with no cat. i have never thrown any check engine lights. does anyone know if i need to re-install my cat for the emissions test?
yes you will pass.
on OBDII vehicles, all they do is plug into your DLC and check for any active fault codes related to emissions. if for any reason your car is producing more bad emmissions then when it left the factory, the vehicle's sensors (o2 sensor for example) will trigger a fault code.
with a test pipe you ARE producing more bad emissions then allowed by the state but you have the test pipe cel fix to prevent the o2 sensor from picking that up.
your engine already knows (based on the car's many emissions sensors) if you you are within the legal limits of emissions or not. this is why the "air team" only plugs into your computer. they rely on your computer to tell them if you pass or not. thats why they dont give 1996 and newer vehicles the IM240 test.
if you dont have a check engine light on, you are good-to-go.
