So I've started looking for a car that I could use as a winter beater and that has the potential to be a decent and cheap track car. I came across this:

LS/vtec CRX

It looks like a good deal to me - I dig CRX's and the price is right, but I've read the LS/vtec swap can have reliability issues. Any opinions?

The LS/VTEC swap is a nice setup if it was done properly. I.E. New gaskets, head studs, etc. Find out who did the work, have it compression tested and leakdown.
