any pics you can post?
Has anyone installed subs behind the seats "or" were the plastic tray is for the hard top to rest on when its fully opened? Having my car in pieces that gave me the idea of taking the soft top out of the car and using this area for 2 small subs 8" or 10" for a clean tight bass. Looks to be plenty of room for a small free air sub just want to make sure that it can hold the weight of the sub or subs.
I like it
what if you went with a sub that was thinner? would you be able to keep the spare tire?
this is what I was considering....for size anyway. (then maybe I can keep the spare??)

also on the door speakers how tight is the space? I see most of the high line separates are 6 3/4 and OEM is 6.5

I have yet to try a shallow mount sub. I'm actually going to take my chances on that this coming winter when I redo my set-up. I plan to get the 10" Kenwood xrw10f. I remember talking to Urmil one night and he showed me a shallow mount sub, but I can't recall what it was. According to him it was pretty good. Then again, I like to hear it for myself and rate it.
I'm currently running the polk db651's. It fits just fine after doing some trimming around the edges of the speaker mount since the speaker wouldn't sit flush at first. The door and speaker clearance is tight, but not touching.
You could also add some speakers behind the seats. I know a few of us midwest owners are doing so. I was able to fit a 6 1/2 and a 4x6 on each plastic panel( totaling 4 speakers behind me). But I wouldn't recommend doing this if you're tall since you need all the leg room you can get which may require you to move your seat all the way back.
Here's a pic of it:

I need to make it to a meet and see/hear these set ups in person.
I had considered putting a set of separates behind each seat also but wasn't sure how the sound would travel. Im not that tall so I can fit something in that spot if it makes sense. I had considered using that spot for the thin sub also as an option and leaving the soft top in place.

Any sub won't work/fit on that spot. There's a 4" wide piece of metal that crosses on there. The gap is only good enough for a speaker magnet to fit and it's a really tight fit.

Hey Mike,
If you really want the best sound with the top down then get headrest speakers. I custom fabbed myself a headrest setup that looks pretty clean and sounds utterly fantastic. Rockford Fosgate speakers in the headrest and in the doors
Good Luck!!

..Like i said, custom fab...
Here's my current set-up.
Alpine DVA9861
JL Audio C5 650 components (I was running Diamond Audio D971's but they were overkill in the S)
Alpine PDX 4.150 (This was bi-amped on the Diamond speakers, now is only running 2 channels, the other 2 aren't being used at all)
Alpine PDX 1.600 for the Rockford DVC 12" sub
I'm also running a Rockford Fosgate EPX2 Symmetry (old school) 28 band EQ, I have full tonal control over each and every speaker, I'm sure overkill to some, but I love it.

I can hear mine loud and clear, with the top down at any speed, and I stress the clear part, I have zero distortion at any volume.
So far, Benji has given the best advice: Go to stores and listen to different speakers. It will make a difference. I didn't believe this until I tried it out myself. I was set to buy a set of speakers and went to another shop and found the Boston Acoustics were my favorite.
I got my sub from an S2000 owner in AZ. His name on the board is wlaurent and his website is darksidesubs.com
I originally ran a single 5-channel amp, but it died. It was also a little underpowered. I ended up replacing it with two Memphis amps and it made a world of difference (WAY more power than the 5-channel.)

The single most important selection you will make is the speakers. Like everyone has said, go and listen. Make sure you take music with you that you like, and are familiar with. Preferably something you have listened to on a home system, and most importantly, on CD, not on an Ipod(too much detail lost). Speakers will generally sound either bright, or dark; detailed (sometimes thin) or forward (in your face). Look for something that sounds right to you among those properties.
I listened to many and loved the Focal components, however, I didn't want to spend the money on them. I really like the Boston speakers I picked, but as you will see below, in the end, I'm putting in Focals. So, if you are going to spend money, do it on the speakers.
Someone once told me you select speakers based on sound, and receivers/amps based on specs. While this is not 100% true, it's a pretty good rule of thumb.
I've heard Sam's system, and would agree that it's very good. Mine is a little different, cause I had some different goals.
I have:
Alpine 9887 (an older head unit, but has built in 9 band eq, and can be run active)
Alpine PDX 4.150
JBL 10wV3 Sub
Boston Acoustic Pro 60 components (Soon to be changed out to Focal 165 K2P's)
My system is setup to be as unseen/unobtrusive as possible. The Alpine PDX is mounted under the driver seat. My sub is in a custom inclosure that sits within the spare tool well, but on top of the tools. In other words, I have retained the spare tire, the tools, and can still fit 2 golf bags in the trunk.
