Ok well that sums it up pretty well then. Passing on straight only it seems, which I like. Do people get moved up or down in the groups, based on how they are running throughout the day?
Typically the answer is no. The only exception may be if you start in beginner and really shouldn't be (and your instructor recognizes it), then you and your instructor could talk to the guys who run the event and see what they could do. Also, in the beginner group, you can have your instructor "sign off" on you so that you can drive alone on the second day.
The track is big enough that you usually don't have too many issues. Most people are good about letting you pass. If they aren't, you can run into the pits and ask to be let out with some room and Chrissy (race control) will take care of you.
And passing on the straights works out well. It is meant to be safe and fun learning environment for drivers of all levels, and so far it has lived up to that.

Last year they put instructors in the intermediate class for the first session out. This was the first year that they did this, and as far as I know it went over well. I believe you can ask to have an instructor for more than just one session in intermediate, but you may have to wait a bit longer as they switch cars (depending on the run order of course). Beginner gets an instructor for every session unless they say you are fit to go by yourself and choose to do so.
I did beginner the first year, no regrets. My instructor was a good guy who taught me a lot. There were a couple of occasions where I was stuck behind a train following a really slow driver, but again you can just pit for room. Even if you can't get into beginner, there will likely be a lot of guys who are willing to ride with you and give you pointers.
