Default 17x8 w/ +45mm offset

I am looking at the Falken ZIex 512, but they dont come in 245/40. I know the sizing guide says 245 max on that wheel w/ that offset, but it seems (by some posts Ive seen) that there is some gray area on the issue of offset and tire size (I guess cuz every tire is a little different).

So is there any chance I could run a 255/40/17 tire on back?

Since I own that tire with an 8.5" wheel and 55 offset, I'll chime in. EXCELLENT tires, but the tread is sorta narrow for their size - all season performance afterall. With an 8" wheel and 45 offset, you should really stick with 245, and there are MANY great tires in that size, some with wider tread than the 512's.

Ok, thanks for the info. They are such a good deal its too bad they wont fit. I was thinking the Toyo Proxes 4 would be another good choice. Or if I wanted to spend a bit more, the Pirelli P-Zero Neros.

the lowest rim width for a 255 is 8.5. if you go lower than that your gonna be messing with some safety/handeling issues.

With that wheel width and offset I would not go wider than the 245/40R17.

Yeah, the Pirellis seems like an excellent option, but a bit pricey. I am wondering if the Toyos will give me a little better dry traction due to their softer tread (or at least lower treadware rating).

Tread wear is not transferable from company to company. It also is not an indicator of how soft the rubber compound is. I have not driven the Toyo but the Pirelli is as good as we have driven in an all season tire. They will give longer tread life and very good handling.
If I can help let me know.
