Default Calling Jim - Kumho MX track tire?

Jim,

I have the Kumo MX on my track car, S2000, but just doing HPDE classes with NASA. I've done 3 weekends so far but I'm starting to get more aggressive with the car and need advice on thses MX tires. What is the best hot tire temp? What about the outside temp using a laser pyrometer? Car is 01, stock suspension with AP2 wheels if that helps.

Thanks,

Rob Oxford

Because they are not really R compound tires you should follow the OE PSI for the car. I would say a couple PSI more than stock would be fine.

Thanks. That's were I'm at, 36 lbs. hot. Tires get real sticky to the touch. Tried 40 lbs. and 38 lbs. hot and they just didn't get sticky until I got it down to 36-37. I just don't want to over heat them til they get greasy and begin to "chunck".

I have found the opposite to be true. Their grip increases for the first few laps then decreases, slowly, with increased number of laps. I have these tires on my M3 and have found them to be the same. My S2k came with them, and I have but one track day on them. Granted, they never really grese up to the point where they are just butter, but grip really decreases with laps.

Every street tire is going to be so so for lapping days. Anything more and I would say go to an R compound tire.
