Default NEED YOUR OPINION & EXPERTISE ON

Hey Guys:

Would one really notice a big difference in performance/handling if one change the current OEM 17" staggered set-up which is

Front:
17" x 7.0", +55 offset, 215 tire
Rear:
17" x 8.5", +65 offset, 245 tire

to...

Front:
18" x 7.0", +55 offset, 215 tire
Rear:
18" x 8.5", +65 offset, 245 tire

?????

Does the 1" increase in diameter really make a noticeable difference in performance/handling (keeping everything the same specs including offsets and tire size)?

As always, I value your opinion and input.

Thanks

PS. I've read (somewhere but can't remember which forum but one of our members here) that going from 17 to 18 will require some fender rolling. Based on what I understand from our "Wheel Fitment Guide," this set-up is acceptable without making any sorts of modification. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

you will be fine with that offset. well it really depends on the brand of wheel you get, they will most likely weigh more so you might feel the different

You want to run 215/40/18 and 245/35/18 with that setup to keep your diameters and contact patches the same as stock (if that is what you are asking). You won't have to roll fenders or change camber or anything else with that setup. It is effectively the same as stock -your tire sidewalls are just a bit shorter so you may experience a slightly less compliant ride than with the 215/45/17 and 245/40/17 on the stockies. There is an issue of possibly adding a little weight, depending on wheels and tires selected, but probably not enough to notice in daily driving.
Cheers!
Mike

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I continue my search for custom "forged" wheels but will stick with the same current OEM 17" set-up I have with MY06. I really like the way it handles. My only complaint is that I can't seem to "like" the OEM rims, hence, I'm in market for new rims.

Thanks again for your input.

Jock, if it's just a less-than-happiness with the look of the stock AP2 rims (n' on that, we're in total agreement. 'Always remind me of sandcrab roadkill) a switch to another rim in the 17" diameter would save you the price of new hoops. I'm not puttin' down your 18" idea, but while they might make response seem sharper (less sidewall=less sidewall flex), if you spend time on rough pavement, they also might cause you to be unhappy with the resultin' ride like Cap'n Mike said.
Be well n' good luck.

Thanks for the input, Java.

I have definitely decided to stick with 17" rims. You're absolutely right about driving on rough roads (California especially the Los Angeles area are noted for its pot-holes).

Again, I'll stick with 17" set-up, it's really just a matter of finding the rims that I really like and do not resemble "sandcrab roadkill."

You may want to check http://www.tirerack.com. They have some really nice looking wheels including the Volk Racing RE30.

Good luck with your search and post some pics when you're done.
