I had an interesting experience with a recent order at TireRack. I bought a set of wheels and tires which cost just over $1700. Because of the dollar amount, TireRack needed to verify that I did place the order before they charged my card. I give them huge kudos for their policy for verifying that I was the person who placed the order!

However, their verification method is a little strange. They require that your phone number be listed in an internet telephone directory so that they can look up your name and number. Unfortunately, my number was unlisted so I spent two days trading voice mail messages with their customer service department to figure out a way to verify that I did place the order.

Anyway, we ended up using the publicly listed number for my employer. The operator patched the call to me and the order was completed. To me, that seemed like a highly unsecure method to verify the order. If I were devious, I could setup a phone number for a fake company and "patch" calls to the person making orders. Luckily, I work for a large corp so this was not a concern.

I've placed large orders via phone before and other merchants have asked for the customer service phone number for the credit card company. I would then have to call the credit card company and verify that I placed the order.

Has anyone else experienced this procedure when ordering from TireRack? Jim - do you have any comments on the process? Thanks.

BTW, the sales and customer service people were excellent and I'll definitely order my tires from them again!

Next time, order them through the Marketplace link at the top. That way S2KI.com will get a little gift from TireRack.

Their computer system was being updated and they could not get anything shipped out....I had to wait for ever to get a set of tires for a friend....jeez!!

One thing I have noticed is that half the time their service is impressive, with follow up and very knowledgable people......and half the time they have jerks on the phone that all they care about is making the sale and nothing else.

I wonder when they started doing that credit card check thing. I have placed a bunch or orders for $ 2k + and they have never done that.......

strange on the verification but I haven't ordered from tirerack yet, nor have heard of any issues before. I wonder if my only phone is a cell phone - which I know some owners only have cell phones and no lan lines - if that will go through the same verification process.

We verify every order that is placed. We have many attempted fraud orders every day and we catch most of them. Once you are a repeat customer the verification is much simpler.
As far as the verification procedure goes I am not sure what guide lines they use but a lot of the things are required by the credit card companies.
I do know they need the billing phone number that the bank has on file for your account.
I am sorry it took so long on the order. If you have any problems in the future let me know by calling or putting my name on the order when placed on line.

Once again, thank you

Jim
