Post Expand your Luggage Carrying Ability

I thought I’d share this in case someone(s) like to travel, but can't seem to fit all of the stuff we enjoy traveling with …… This idea was inspired by the Mullens Red Cap Trailer developed in 1936/37 http://www.mafca.com/mullins.html

First I needed a trailer hitch for MY04 S. Although Chase Race (http://www.chaserace.com/s2k.php) makes a very nice hitch, I purchased a MY00-03 Da'Lan trailer hitch for my MY04 and modified it slightly. Curt Hitch is now making a hitch for MY 04-09 (Part Number 11198) at a cost less than $260 http://www.curtmfg.c...yle=Convertible

You will also need a 3 to 2 Wire Power Converter Module 56146 (circuit protected) to connect your trailer lights ( http://www.curtmfg.c...9&categoryid=57 ). If you do NOT install the "powered" wiring harness your cruise control will stop working whenever you turn on a turn signal and BOTH of your turn signals will flash no matter which one you use. The instructions said to tap the positive terminal on the battery, but I tapped the hot side of an "always on" circuit in the fuse box.

I purchased a Hybrid Junior 2 trailer (because it was good looking, all aluminum, inexpensive compared to the others I'd seen and the right height):

Hybrid Trailer Company

I then purchased a pair of replica AP2 V1 wheels from here:

Replica Wheels

Then 2 rattle cans of suzuka paint and 2 rattle cans of clearcoat from here:

Automotive Touch up Paint

However, I then had to go to my local RV/travel trailer supplier and purchase a wider Dexter torsion axle – wider by 7 inches so the OEM rims would fit.

The end result: It towed well over the 6900 miles at speeds better than the speed limit from Northern VA to Colorado (Enchantment 2010) and back home to Northern VA. Its contents stayed dry and dust free, and it was a pleasure to tow.

Those are pretty neat. I have always wanted to get a little bike trailer, get a hitch for the s2000, and tow a ruckus behind it.

I purchased the hitch for MY00-03 on ebay - $35. At the time Curt Hitch didn't make a hitch for the MY04-09 and indicated that they didn't plan on making one either. Although the Chase hitch is a great device, it was a bit pricey. PicturePro (a member on S2ki) used the MY00-03 hitch on his MY04 for his bike rack, I used his idea and added a couple of inches of flat bar from the trunk pan mounts to the differential mounts (like the chase hitch) for added strength. It also sits higher than the chase hitch. Here are a couple of pictures

Sorry for bumping a kind of old thread, but I just wanted to say how cool I think this project is. The final product is really creative and looks great!

The website that you bought the wheels from also caught my attention. I've never heard of this site before, and their prices seem pretty reasonable. One question, though: they say all their wheels are either reconditioned oem wheels, or brand new replica oem wheels (if specified.) I didn't see how to tell if the wheels they had for sale were refurbished or replica units. If all the S2000 wheels they have are replicas, does anyone know what company manufactures them and how much they weigh? How's the quality and finish compared to oem? Sorry for all the questions. I'll call them during business hours to try and find out some information, but I'd still like to hear your opinion on them. Thanks!

The wheels I got were replicas (and made in China) for MY 04 they cost me $134 .....seems their price increased by $35 .... They are pretty darn close to OEM ..... Take a look at my signature .. can you tell the OEM from the replicas? I am unsure of the weight ....
