damon,

if you want to get a sense of what option 3 sounds like, then you are welcome to listen to my setup at our next meet. i have the front components powered by a nakamichi headunit and a sub in the trunk powered by an alpine amp. phil has heard the setup too, so i'm sure he can give you his thoughts on it.

phil,

that diatribe gets an a++ in my book.

Chock full of good information as well as humorous ramblings and witty retorts with the obligatory raccoon slaying thrown in for dramatic effect.

spoken with a will ferrel tone "'Well played phil - you are a DElight."

dan - what sub enclosure do you have?

I would definately like to hear it. I spent thousands on my pathfinder setup - top of line alpine and mb quart. Only to find that when i finally added a small sub and amp it was the most effective step for the least amount of money. But im just not sure if i want the weight in the s2.

phil,

i know i may be hearing "i told you so" should my amp die from overheating, but the amp runs so cooly that the operating temperature does not ever read too hotly. i used to have the amp mounted in the spare tire area, but that required using an amp mount. the amp mount that jim (pas2knut) made me weighed like 10-15 lbs! gasp! so with two amps, the amp rack, the sub and sub box, that added like 80 lbs to my car.

so, i made myself this tiny sub box with the shallow sub, knowing that it may sound boomy from not having enough airspace, and mounted the amp directly underneath it. getting rid of one amp, the amp rack, and using 1/2 inch mdf instead of 3/4 inch mdf to build the box, i saved 40 lbs. plus, i made it so that it's removable in one easy step for track/autocrossing. and it still sounds decent! so even if it dies eventually, i won't be disappointed.

damon,

i have no idea about the quality of the sub but the box looks decent and it's definitely enough power as long as you're not looking for crazy bass.
for reference, my amp is rated at 175 watts rms and i have the gain set at 0 (from 0 to 12db) and the headunit sub control at -2 (from -10 to 10), and it is still plenty of bass for me.

personally, i wouldn't get that box because i take my car to go golfing sometimes. and a golf bag would definitely not fit with that type of box in the trunk. but you may not golf or you may not drive your S to go golfing, so...

Guys - Sorry I was unable to attend Philapalooza. My company was sold Thursday of last week and a mandatory inventory was put into place to count the 10 million dollor+ that we have under roof.As with any buy out times are a little scary right now. They already let one salesman go. They have assured the rest of us that our jobs are secure and nothing will change, but you just never know. I wish I could just say "F" it and adopt the "Peter from Office Space Philosophy" and come to work in t-shirt and jeans and go fishing most days and watch Kung Fu on TV with Jennifer Aniston, but I'm just not wired that way. Hey Steel, need a tights salesman? I'm your guy! Just dont except me to model them!

Anyway to add to the stereo portion of this discussion, as Phil mentioned, I have the rear panel behind the seat setup that Phill so graciously and expertly installed for me. I love it. Rounds out the sound and is nice and clean. The only additional thing I want to do is replace the stock door speakers with some higher end units that wont distorte under higher volumes.
