Ive been in the import business for (im now 32 and been working at shops since i was 20 and building Hondas since i was 17 so going on 15 years now) quite awhile now and ive seen it all. Started out with a company called LANDSPEED RACING, then on to AUTOSPEED/IMPORT DIRECT, then on to SUPERIOR RACING DEVELOPMENT and then on to SCIENCEOFSPEED where im at now. First major failure of Honda transmissions is the wrong fluid. If there was a comparable fluid to be used in the transmissions they would list in their service manuals but they dont, everytime says HONDA MTF ONLY. Why??? No one knows for sure, could be the distances between synchros and hub selectors, gears not sure. Im just telling you from personal experience SYNTHETIC FLUIDS are not made for the tolerances in Honda 5/6 speed transmissions. I cant tell you WHY, but i can tell you ive seen number of transmissions fail due to SYNTHETIC FLUID. Im just letting you all know with the time ive been around and have seen many failures to HONDA transmissions. NISSAN-TOYOTA-etc etc etc are different and most of them use GEAR OIL 70-90, 80-90 just like what we run in our diffs. If HONDA wanted to be the same we would have the same transmissions but all HONDAS run a lighter based oil around a 10w30 weight just like engine oil. I wish i had the answer for you guys specifically but i dont. I hope this helps a little coming from someone first hand.

I work at an auto parts retailer and when I look up specifications on the transmission fluid type on any manual Honda, they all say 10W30; although I would never recommend putting any 10W30 in your Honda Transmisison. Nonetheless, I believe you're right about Honda MTF being thin like motor oil. So I've decided not to switch to Redline MTL. I am now convinced in sticking with Honda MTF, which is specially formulated for Honda Transmissions. They use this fluid in their transmissions for a reason, just like they recommend using 10W30 Motor Oil in your engine for a reason, and using any other fluid could negatively affect your transmission.

I've always understood that 75/90 gear oil is about the same viscosity of 10w40 engine oil. 10w40 can be used in the trans temporarily but the additives are different in the engine oil as compared to the gear oil. I've run Redline fluid in mine for over 150k miles and it has worked well for me, so I think I'll just stick with it.

Caring Office Coordinator???

Chris, 75/90 gear oil is not close to 10w40 motor oil. it is ALOT thicker, and wouldn't pass through the pump/bearings/passages as fast as needed, like the thin Honda MTF. I may switch to redline on the next change as I am completely dissatisfied with the new formula of honda MTF. mine feels notchier than ever. and it felt smooth as glass before I changed it the other week (it had the old formula honda MTF)

He wasn't a COC as far as i know, but then again i have never talked to you. If he did not want us to install your ITB's there must have been a good reason why he didnt want us to install them for you. I would call him and ask him why he didnt want us to. He is the owner so he can do what he wants.
