Default diff noise

Last weekend I went for a bit of a drive with the roof up and stereo off. When slowing down, or accelerating slowly the diff sounded very noisey (sounded like metal grinding...but not really... kinda like a "shhhhhhhhhhhhh" noise.). I noticed it when I first got the car, but it seems like it might be getting louder.

when driving hard(ish) (not vtec'ing car's only got 1,600+kms on it) the noise disappears.

Is there something wrong? Or is this normal?

wil..

Not sure, but next service ask them to check the diff for metallic particles.

Yikes! Just a warning that if you do you'll almost certainly void your warranty. And yes they will know because it's full of white PTFE particles that are obvious. This is the basic problem too as PTFE is a solid and will settle out of the oil and cause sludging. Du Pont, the makers of "Teflon" branded PTFE as used in Nulon, have repeatedly said that there are no benefits to using Teflon in car engines or transmissions, and at one point even stopped selling it to the manufacturers to protect their name, until they were taken to court over it.

Not denying Jacob's positive experience with it, but just be careful.

Wilch, see if you can find one of the other experienced S2000 owners in Sydney and get them to go for a drive with you in your car. They should be able to quickly say either "this is normal" or else "this is unusual" .

I'd also suggest going back to your Honda dealer and ask that the Service Manager/Supervisor, Head mechanic etc take it for a drive. If the service supervisor says it needs attention then you won't have any arguments about warranty coverage.

I'd be happy to check it out for you Wilch. I'm writing an article for the HSCC newletter about mechanical problems and that includes diffs.

Yeah, it's even worse because it clogs oil filters.

That's what happened to my WRX when I tried Castrol Syntrax. However, with the S2000 I found that both Castrol Syntrans and Red Line MTL are better than the Honda fluid, and that Red Line MTL is the best by quite a wide margin. If you prefer to use synthetic as I do you should give the Red Line a try. It's available from Coventry Auto Parts.

Which ELF product are you using? Are you sure it's GL-4? If it's GL-5 you need to get it out of there ASAP.
