Most people buy BMWs for the badge...and don't know that VWs are the better cars.
Some day all will bow at the Altar of Wolfsburg.

FWIW, I don't see nearly as many E9x M3's as E46's. I think the combo of higher prices, gas prices, and the recession really hurt sales. Hopefully that means more of the new gen owners are real enthusiasts.

its not sad, BMW is in the business of making money, so they make the 3 Series which is an "entry level" luxury car, so all the 20 somethings thet get out of college with a job go and buy one because they think it makes them appear "successful or wealthy". My fiancee has a 3 series and it has been the biggest peice of shit ever, alll kinds of problems, I have had my S2000 for 95,000 miles, of which 20,000 has been boosted not one PROBLEM ,

S2000 owners buy the car because it appeals to our soul, the majority (not all) BMW drivers purchase theirs to valet in front of a restaurant.

You will know you have a true enthusiast when the guy in the M3, or M5 gives you nod or stops to chat with you about your car, its the Douchebags that wont look at you or give you respect in your S2000 while their in their BMW because its just an image thing
I'm about to hit 150,000 miles in my 3-series. All trouble free.

Some times you just get a bad egg, I suppose.

I agree that we all fo a little badge whoring, but my brand preferences stem from research and some makes tend to cost more to own than others. When your flagship sedan drips half its value before it goes out of warranty. There tends to be some truth.
But it is true about bmw owners, they rant and rave about the quality of their cars when they don't realize they have leatherette and among the worst orange peel texture of any new car. And why do their bumper covers cost so friggin much, makes no sense.
So sad how some girls will choose guys based on the emblem of the dudes car...

My thoughts exactly.

Almost everyone buys something b/c of the badge. How many of us would skip over a Kia,Daewoo,Suzuki and jump to Honda? How many of us wouldnt touch a German car and get a Lexus, Infiniti, Acua. EVERYONE IS SOME SORT OF BADGE WHORE.
Wow...you are right...you made a very good point...I guess all of us have a little badge whore in us...

and yeah agree with the fact that BMWs are a little/lot unreliable.
when i had the E36 i always braged about how the car had 146K on the clock but at the same time i spent over 700 on a new cooling system coz all of them go out after 100k or so...then the altarnator...which still i had problems with until the day i sold it...and i bought my car from a teacher who took care of it...and sold it because of the gas, and bought a Prius.

today when i turn into the garadge, this E46 M3 was parked next to my parking spot, right when i got out. he said "the engine sounds familiar!", i said "did you have a S2000 before the M3??...he replied "ooo, i thought that was the Z4"...
this dude knew nothing about cars!!?
OMG Finally some one else who sees this other than me.

I do IT work for a law firm and I have a Suzuka AP1 converted to AP2. A Lawyer there owns an NFR AP1. So I was talking to a couple "car" guys (one owns the new M3, one has the new M5, and the other a 335 Coupe) and when I said, "No I have the same car Luke has but it's older" they all looked at me crazy because they thought I drove a Z4 and that is why they were talking to me.

I was shocked about how ignorant they were yet they claim to be car guys.

since most s2000 owners don't track them what do they buy them for?

People rocking e30/36 bmws are, in my experience, overwhelmingly "car people." and i think the same could be saidin a lot of other cases. but new car drivers? ppppssshhh.

bmws have many appreciable qualities to the car person, as land rovers have for the off-roader. but, overwhelmingly, it is a 20 year old sorority girl /w bug eye sunglasses, status craver, ect in one. But not when they are >~5 years old.
