When I think of BMW, I think of a car fully loaded with luxury and performance in one package Its true thou, that most ppl buy BMWs for the badge then performance, etc. I have a few co-workers who don't ever take their BMWs to the max, they see it as a car within there status, thats all that matters to them. If we were all rich(or middle class with lots of $$$ laying around) would we have bought the s2k or the BMW M3/M5/etc.

if you would have asked me this 8 month ago, i would have said M3. but now it would be a S and a E30 M3....
i'm sure there are so many people here who don't like BMWs and "luxury fast cars" at all..and they would pick the S or something similar no matter how much money they had...

Most people buy BMWs for the badge. Enthusiasts buy BMWs to track.
IMHO an enthusiast would buy a BMW because they wanted a street car with a slightly harder-than-normal edge to it. Anyone who is serious about track work can find better track cars for significantly less money, or superior track cars for M3 money.

My M coupe is competent - more or less - on track, but it's by far the least sensible of our cars to use for that purpose. Just my 2 cents - YMMV of course

A lot of BMW owners are enthusiasts and easy to get along with, the majority are not. Its image for most people. Most new BMWs are leased, not bought. There are so many comments in this thread I agree with - bugeye glasses, "wanna-be" post grad, hardparkers, etc. I was bar hopping with some people last night and one guy was like "I have a BMW... its an 08.. paid off.. blah blah."

Naturally I asked about it, and of coruse, its a 328. But hes gots a Bimma and its paid off! LOL.

New BMWs do nothing for me. E31 850CSi, E39 M5, E36 M3, S54 Z coupe/roadster... all longtime favorites... anything post Bangle (minus M coupe for drivetrain) - just don't do it for me.

Now with Bangle on his way out, I wonder how it will look like

since most s2000 owners don't track them what do they buy them for?
To put on GT spoilers, green wheels, and goto an empty parking lot with their DSLR cameras.

I'd say it depends on the model:

Automatic 323i, 325i, 525i, Z4 - Image
135i, 335i, M3, M5, Z4M - Enthusiast

Obviously, this still doesn't apply to all cases. Even base model 3 series are decent driver's cars compared to most other sedans.
