I'm amazed at how quick a 3.8l, n.a., 6-cyl., 355 h.p. 911 S is. How'd they do THAT? All in all, we car enthusiasts seem to obsess a bit much over numbers (and badge stereotypes, for that matter), IMO. Buy what you like best and enjoy. If you're competing on a track, well, that's a different matter, I suppose.
Weight distribution.

There has to be more to it than that. The rear weight bias will give you good grip at launch, but at 9.6 sec. to 100, the 911 S pulls like a 400+ h.p. V8 long after it hooks up. That was the point with the Evo. AWD grip turns in a decent 0-60, but then it loses steam on its way to 15 sec. to 100.

The evo has very high drivetrain loss, the Porsche by contrast has very little, but still manages a similar launch. Besides 9.6s is not a very long time for a traction limited V8 to recover its poor launch. If you lined the 2 cars up side by side on a roll, the 400hp V8 will most certainly pull and keep pulling. Porsche's have always been very fast 0-100 mostly because of the weight distribution. At least that's how I see it.
well, the 911 isnt known for being a slouch after a 100 either... weight distribution is important, not to mention the fat Michellin tires... especially for the launch... but all the other fundamentals are in place as well... it's weight is relatively low compared to most cars mentioned here... even a regular C6 weighs a little more... its got awesome gearing... its motor is strong on the top of the rev range... drivetrain loss is at an unbeatable ~12%... and the car has a lower drag coefficient compared to most cars mentioned here as well...

so, id venture to say that, there is no car on earth with 355 HP or less, that will pull harder...

From the Nov. Top Gear - nice to see there's more to a car than acceleration times.

No, I didn't type it...copied from another forum. Have to give a to Top Gear for their conclusion.

I like that article. It sums things up very well. The M3 is not a sports car.

Thanks rai, that list is impressive. The Z06 never seizes to amaze me. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by the Gallardo Sl's 7.9 sec time for 0-100 MPH.

[QUOTE=Chris S,Dec 12 2007, 09:08 PM] However - and this is a point that need stressing - the fact that the M3 has four seats, does not make it exempt from a Porsche shaped shafting. Everyone needs to dismiss the notion that this thing is practical. Those rear seats won

the M3's V8 is more technologically refined, in mechanics and tuning... have you looked at its torque curve? that things flatter than anything remotely resembling a 400+ HP 4 liter engine...
Below are the E92 M3 power & torque curves.

And this is the RS4 power & torque. To me it looks like the RS4's 4.2 has more torque all the way up to 7k, after which the M3 pulls ahead.
