Why does everyone assume AWD is better than RWD?

I live in Montreal where our winters are 1000 times as bad as you guys and enjoy my S2000 a lot more in winter than I did with my old WRX.

Of course the S2000 had snow tires on but I don't see why an M5 would be impossible to handle in the snow with excellent snow tires?
I don't know...my s2000 is quite good in the snow w/ a dedicated set of $650 snow tires. However, my wife's subaru forester w/ cheapo all-seasons is way better.

Therefore, one might conclude that an RS4 would outperform the M5...especially given the power these beasts are putting down. However, I think the REAL question is: How does an M5 w/ dedicated snow tires hold up to an RS4 w/ summer tires, in icy and snowy conditions?

Then again, maybe that is the takeaway...the RS4 actually does compare to the M5 but costs $15k less.
i dont agree with that... the M5 is a significantly bigger platform and chassis, and offers more interior room... the RS4 compete's with the new M3... the RS5, if/when its released will be the M3 Coupe's ideal competition, and we'll see Audi will price the RS5 lower than an M3...

M5 compete's with the S6... and the E63...

The RS4 competes with the M3 sedan when it comes out.
The upcoming RS6 competes with the M5.

However, if I was to say: I want a fun luxury, sports SEDAN (esp if you want a manual transmission) to purchase in the year 2007, it comes down to the RS4 vs the M5.

Not because they are the same niche exactly, but because the direct competitors (M3 sedan and RS6) haven't come out yet.
