M3 vert doesn't really do it for me because the coupe is better.

The s2000 is a better vert, well because their is no coupe form to compare it to.

I need more space in the S2000 when it comes to long trips. Food, drinks, "lounge space" just to move your legs around or shuffle around is hard in that car. Ever try grabbing a cell phone out of your pocket driving that haha.

What doesn't make sense?

He wants to road trip across the country not set lap times at Chris S' local track.

Mid 13 second quarter miles, great handling, room for luggage/crap, comfortable and ability to drop the top for taking in the scenery/getting some sun and enjoying the ride.
You forgot to mention that the gas mileage isn't great (not as good as a Corvette, that's for sure), the car isn't exactly reliable (the S54 loves its maintenance and prefers to be babied), the tires are very expensive and wear out quickly, the E46 M3 vert is ugly, and I'm guessing the OP would rather the coupe. The E46 M3 isn't what I'd pick for his needs, I'd sooner pick a 335i, Vette, etc.

Honestly OP, spend $13-16k on an 04-06 Acura TSX or TL. Both get great gas mileage, are really fun to drive, are super comfortable, ridiculously reliable, look sharp and sexy, VERY affordable, and come in auto or 6 speed. Perfect road trip cars.

When I was reading the original post, the 5-door mazda3 was the car that popped into my mind. I wouldn't mind taking a sporty (not sportscar), reliable, good mpg, spacious wagon across the country at all.

For close to 40K you could pick up a new 335d. I'd love one of these for a cross country trip. 600+ mile range with 23 mpg City / 36 mpg Hwy. I would rather have a C6 but having driven the 335d, it would be my 2nd choice.

He clearly made this thread asking for opinions. I gave mine. Whether that includes financial advice or not i gave my opinion on what i would do with that budget. Its what he asked the posters to do. The fit does everything he stated he wanted out of a vehicle much cheaper and he could use that money for other important aspects of life. We all dont live in our cars ya know. He did not ask for you to give your opinion on what you thought on another posters opinion. So take your stealth trolling and go somewhere else. Your not impressing anybody.
